To the editor
As a taxpayer and citizen of Rappahannock County I attended Monday’s Board of Supervisors meeting primarily to hear from the supervisors regarding the landfill issue. I came away both disillusioned and angry.
Mr, Frank Reynolds, the attorney and representative of CCRC presented a detailed, informative report of the shortcomings of the proposed landfill site covering both the ecological and the human factors; more specifically how it would effect a large number of families located in close proximity to the proposed site. 1 * *
After MrvReynolds’ presentation, supervisor Clarence Baldwin made'tHe motion that the site be withdrawn from consideration due to the many factors outlined by Mr. Reynolds and especially because of the population density in that area.
The ensuing discussion by the board was disappointing and demonstrated a lack of concern for the citizens. They were more concerned with getting on with the hiring of a consulting firm to prove the suitability of their site irregardless of the fact that it’s a bad place for a landfill. No other county has placed a landfill next to a populated area. They showed no interest in pursuing other means of disposal.
One remote site suggested by the CCRC was rejected earlier because access crossed the wrong person’s land. The site in dispute backs up to some 28 families, but they are mostly relatively new residents of Rappahannock County.
