Delbert Price, chairman of the Concerned Citizens of Rappahannock County, (CCRC) said December 8 that the organization “is shifting its focus” in the campaign to solve the county’s waste-management problems.
“We believe,” said Price, “that we have demonstrated beyond question the wholly unsuitable nature of the Route 621 (Margolis) site that the supervisors have voted to condemn for a sanitary landfill. The evidence we have amassed, including the report of an independent professional geohydrologist, seems more than enough to convince a court.” f
Now, said the CCRC chairman, “because the Board of Supervisors havenot created a mechanism for doing so, we are launching a broad effort to find tracts that meet acceptable standards required for the establishment of a landfill. It is not our role, as private citizens, to select a site. What we now are doing, instead, is to screen many potential areas, testing each against objective criteria, to help the Board select the best possible site. “We are also looking into the very realistic possibility that -we can solve our solid waste problem without a county landfill. There are installations which receive solid waste and convert it into electrical energy, and there are reputable companies which will contract to dispose of our solid waste. This should be seriously considered as an alternative,” Price said.
