Rappahannock News: Was the student walkout a legitimate form of protest?
Lane: I certainly believe it was a legitimate form of protest. I’m proud of students who would stand up for something that they believe in. That’s part of the American system.
The only thing I’m ashamed of is that so many kids were misinformed about what was going on. The kids had never even heard that the teachers were going to get a 12 percent increase to their salaries. A famous quotation is that ‘too little information is a dangerous thing,’ and certainly there is way too little knowledge of what’s going on with the schools.
All I know is that when the students finally realized that the teachers would probably all take home a thousand dollars more next year than they took home this year-those students’ facial expressions absolutely changed. So I think it would have been nice if they had been well-informed when they walked out.
