Festival
A Spring Festival of Art, Craft and Music will be held this weekend, May 25-26 at the Swinging Bridge Pottery in Criglersville, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. This event, the eleventh festival sponsored by the Pottery, will feature the work of more than 50 designer-craftspeople, offer a wide variety of foods and entertainment by 20 different musical groups.
Among the exhibitors are wood crafters whose work includes mirrors and spoons, marquetry, toys, furniture, canes, boxes and chests, coaster wagons, f.oy castles and several styles of canning. Fabric artists will show spinning and weaving, quilts and applique, dolls, children’s clothes, kites and miniature hot air balloons and other stitchery. Leathersmiths will offer bags and braided belts; greenhouses i will stock plants and growing herbs; and several booths will display dried herbs and spices, extracts and potpourri.
There will also be colonial metal work, blacksmithry, pewter, tinsmithry, several booths of sterling silver jewelry and lapidary art. Other craftspeople will offer tole painting, dower and candle chests, basketry, wind chimes and bells, teddy bears and apple-head dolls, bevelled and stained glass, and clocks. A group of potters will show their stoneware and porcelain work, in addition to the five potters whose work is on continuous display in the Swinging Bridge, a number of fine artists will display their paintings and prints. Most of the artists live and work in the immediate area, but some are coming from New York and New Jersey, West Virginia, and North and South Carolina. All are professionals who will accept custom and wholesale orders.
Food wall include barbecued pork and chicken, breads and cheeses, lamb . chops and lamb shis kebab, Italian sausages and Pennsylvania funnel cake, clam chowder and crab cakes and fudge. Wine from Madison County’s Vavin Vineyard will be served by the Blue Ridge Arts Council, a non-profit group dedicated to promoting the arts and crafts of the area.
Visitors are requested not to park on paved roads; free parking is available by croscing the Robinson River on the Hoover Bridge (Rt. 649) and following signs to the Festival grounds. Admission is $1.50; under 12 free.
