they could have won 10 games without me even being there,” Dawson said. “A coach of a team like that has to be careful not to overcoach, but just guide and direct. What the kids and I accomplished that first year will always stay with me.”
Dawson’s overall record for three seasons as basketball coach is 35/31 and 22/27 in baseball with two games left. The numbers in the win/loss columns were not the important considerations for Dawson as a coach, though. “Coaching was never a matter of winning or losing to me,” Dawson said. “It was a way to teach the kids good sportsmanship, a way for them to meet kids from other schools, prepare for college and learn how to communicate with other people.”
Throughout his three years in Rappahannock, Dawson said that he was most impressed with how hard the students tried. “Towards the end of a season the teams always played their best, and that showed improvement that comes from hard work and the kids’ willingness to become the best they could be,” Dawson said. “If they
