To the editor:
The following is a memo I sent to the School Board several days after the Board of Supervisors cut $120,000 from the school budget. In light of the recent demonstrations by the students, I feel it is important the entire community be made aware of my thoughts on the subject.
‘I wish to thank each of you for the support shown to teachers in the past budget sessions, and for listening.to my remarks during my tenure as RCEA representative over many years. This year I felt -you heard our cry.
Personally, I have spent many hours trying to find some way to, make our situation clear to the board, and after many past disappointments, I had always resolved to a new and different approach next year. This year, for the first time, I felt we had done all that was humanly possible. The graphs we presented showed well our contention that we needed a major increase in salary to retain quality teachers. I see no way we could improve our argument.
My own reason for staying in this county for the last 12 years hinged heavily on my belief that wherever I would go there would be problems and I dedicated myself to improving the situations existing in this county, over moving to greener pastures in other counties. In short, I feel defeated. I
