feelings are legitimate. I don’t think their understanding of the $120,000 cut is sufficient. Their concern in wanting to do what is best for the schools is legitimate, but their concern is not legitimate in the sense that they had no idea
what kind of affect the $120,000 cut would have.
As a matter of fact, the $120,000 cut by the board of supervisors precipitated an additional 1 percent being added to the teachers’ salaries. Rappahannock County will pay its teachers 12 percent more next year. Again, when many of the kids found this out their expressions went blank. Rappahannock News: Do you consider teachers’ salaries in Rappahannock County to be low? Lane: I consider salaries in Rappahannock County to be low for a professional teacher. Yes I do. I think it’s probably too much for a couple of teachers, but for the vast majority, yes, it probably is.low.
I also think Rappahannock County is going to have a hard time leading the state or country in improving teachers’ salaries. I’ve spent the last couple weeks trying to improve that situation. After all, it is Supervisor Lane who has come out and taken the abuse to really try to put through a teacher salary package that would blow the neighboring counties and the rest of the state out of the water.
