The students called the Virginia Education Association and were advised to make an identification list of programs damaged by the $120,000 cut and to urge the school board to request that the supervisors reconsider. Of the five supervisors, Nelson Lane and Chairman Hubert Gilkey caiqe to the school to talk to the students and answer questions.
Lane was one of the supervisors who requested the $120,000 cut due to the increase in taxes the proposed budget would have required. After the walkout, Lane said that a significant number of the students were misinformed about the 12 percent teachers’ salary increase proposed by the school board. “When they found out about the raise, their expressions went blank,” Lane said.
Gilkey was met with applause by the students since he was the only supervisor to vote for the budget originally proposed by the school board, even though it would have meant an increase in taxes. “The school board’s function is to know the schools, and I
