They also plan to field candidates for two of the open seats, but a GOP headquarters source confirmed that the party will be placing fewer than 00 House candidates in the field, including incumbents running for reelection.
On the other hand the Democrats, accorning to a party spokesman, plan challenges to “at least 25” of the .33 Republicans seeking re-election and expect to have “90 to 95” candidates, including incumbents, running for House seats.
Thus, statistically speaking, the Republican outlook for making significant gains in the House this year is anything but encouraging.
Nevertheless James Turpin, who is monitoring the races at the GOP state headquarters, remains upbeat about his party’s prospects. He points out that this is a gubernatorial year, and that gubernatorial years with their large voter turnouts have, in recent elections, meant substantial House gains for Republicans. He believes that trend will continue.
