If a tick is found, remove it immediately. Grasp it at the head end and use a slow, steady pull. A pair of tweezers is helpful for this task.
When the tick is removed, apply an antiseptic (such as alcohol) to the bite site. Dispose of the tick by crushing it, flushing it down the toilet or putting it in a sealed container and throwing the container away. Then wash your hands well with soap and water to reduce the risk of spreading disease.
Pet owners are advised to examine their animals frequently. Look for attached ticks expecially on the neck, in and about the ears, under the legs and between the toes. Fresh flea-and-tick collars may be helpful on indoor/outdoor pets.
Light tick infestations on dogs can be controlled by rubbing carbaryl (Sevin) dust into the animal’s hair. Also treat the dog’s sleeping quarters and replace old bedding with fresh, untreated bedding.
Crafts Festival Set
The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the 14th Annual Mountain Heritage Arts and Crafts Festival on June 7,8 and 9.
The festival will be held just off Route 340 between Harpers Ferry and Charles Town.
The hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. all three days. Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for children between 6 and 15 years old.
