A Leesburg archer placed first in A Class freestyle unlimited competition recently in the Virginia Open Archery Championship in Staunton.
Taylor Gibson, a retired electrician who built his first longbow some 30 years ago, scored 1,055 to win his event in the two-day archery contest May 18 and 19.
More than 185 shooters from Virginia and neighboring states competed in the annual Virginia championship involving target and simulated setting shooting.
Contestants shoot at 28 targets on Saturday at distances of 20 feet to 80 yards. On Sunday, they shoot at smaller targets at different distances for 14 targets and then shoot in hunting simulated settings at 14 animal targets.
Gibson, his wife and three sons all shoot for eryoyment as well as competition. One of his sons killed two bucks with a bow last season.
As a third place finisher in the state tournament several years ago myself, I can attest to the degree of proficiency necessary to finish first among all the top archers in the state, as well as the cream of the crop from all the nearby states.
