are to make a difference in many lives; in my life! Why can we not realize that many, if not all, of these people are not doing this solely for the money? They all could make more in other pursuits.
Teachers are caught inside a terrible paradox. As a group they are extremely dedicated to their work, but they ultimatley find that they are essentially powerless in the control of their careers. Dedicated people often make the mistake of thinking that people in positions of responsibility above them recognize and appreciate their efforts. We, all of us, talk out of both sides of our mouths about all of this. On the one hand we tell ourselves how important the mission of the schools is. But we also play the teachers as suckers, using their idealism and belief in the future until they bum out, then replace them with the next crop of bright and energetic young faces. It just happens that this time we may bum out a few more than expected in one year, but no matter; others will take their places and the cycle will begin again. Or will it?
