“We’ve been taking from Peter to pay Paul,” said Dr. Wemmer. “The budget for the Zoo has been $10 million, and the Conservation Center receives a little less than 10 percent of that.”
During the summer, the center’s 45 employees receive help from students and volunteers. Besides caring for the animals, the workers have to maintain the grounds and harvest the center’s hay and alfalfa. The center grows enough to feed its animals and the animals in D.C.
