responsibility for the budget of the public schools. They will only end when we all see that it is more than unjust to use the good intentions and finest virtues of another against that person for selfish purposes; that injustice done to another, will sooner or later, be injustice done to us. If we do not or cannot see this, then we might do well to instruct our children and ourselves in how to he and to deceive in place of the traditional academic pursuits. Such would not build a better world but would more honestly prepare the young for what they must face in life.

A great deal more than some dedicated teachers may be lost if our attitudes do not somehow change. We all share this life for what is really a short time in the larger scope of things. This is indeed a physically beautiful place to live, but it is not our physical surroundings which determine whether this is truly a special place. It is by our actions towards others that we affect not only the world, but ultimately ourselves. But what about that sign on the way up to Chester Gap? Perhaps it should be changed to read “Albert Gallantin Willis was a sucker who....” But if we did that then maybe we wouldn’t even need the sign anymore, for what’s so unusual about a sucker. Isn’t one bom every minute!

In his play Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare provides some perspective on just how ageless these problems are. You may recall that Romeo and Juliet were children of two families in the midst of an endless and vicious feud but are ultimately destroyed by the senselessness of their elders. In thinking about the events which have taken place in the Rappahannock schools and which I am afraid are still to come, I have been unable to shake from my thoughts the judgment of the Prince of Verona upon the deaths of Romeo and Juliet:

“See what a scourge is made upon your hate, that heaven finds means to
