All Are Punished!
To the editor:
Those of us who live in Rappahannock County are blessed in many ways. The ageless beauty of the Blue Ridge surrounds.us and nurtures us. There is a balance between man and nature which is at times almost poetic. People of diverse backgrounds, from the common man to current or former international personalities are able to interact with one another in a congenial manner. In how many other places so close to a national capital could one expect to find most of the population casually waving to one another on the road?
Some of us have chosen to live here recently, others are part of families who have lived in these mountains since the early days of this nation. Whatever our tenure, we might all agree that there is indeed a “Rappahannock Heritage,” a phrase which I would like to think describes the common love we share for this land and for one another as its temporal inhabitants.
It is thus with unspeakable sorrow that I write this letter, prompted by the recent actions of the board of supervisors to arbitrarily reduce the budget for the public schools. I believe that the manner in which this reduction was made may provoke a tragedy of great proportions, ultimately resulting in not only the loss of a significant fraction of the public school teachers, but also the most important aspect of this heritage about which so much is spoken. I am writing because I believe that it is in the best interest of all county residents to try to prevent such losses from occurring.
