To the editor:
The school budget and teachers’ compensation has been a major concern in Rappahannock County in recent weeks. It has been addressed in private, in public and in print. The large sit-out at the high school shows that students are actively involved. This issue has become so polarized that we have forgotten that Rappahannock’s citizens share common goals.
A brave woman attended the Supervisors’ public input session on the school budget on Monday, April 29. While there was a large group strongly supporting an increased budget, she alone stood up to speak against higher taxes. We heard her remarks, but too few people, myself included, really listened to what she said. This courageous woman, living on a fixed income, was fearful of the effect of continually increasing real estate taxes. Regardless of how favorably our real estate tax rate compares with surrounding counties, this woman and others have seen a significantly higher bill in recent years. And there is every indication that this trend will continue.
This woman did not speak against better education. I do not recall her speaking against better pay for teachers and other employees. Every member of our Board of Supervisors
