No one we know of seriously disputes the fact that education is a top priority and that teachers should be paid as much as the county can reasonably afford. What some do dispute is the claim that increased real estate taxes should continue to foot the bill for better education and higher teachers’ salaries.
The solution then, as O’Meara suggests, is to put aside hostilities and to consider alternative means of raising revenue. The point is not that an increase in real estate taxes should be ruled out as an option, but that other forms of taxation should relieve real estate from bearing the entire burden of the county’s budget.
Obviously there are not 101 alternatives to real estate taxation in Rappahannock County. Thus some imagination will be required.
