Virginia Tech was awarded a $50,165 grant this spring to provide special programs for financially stressed fanners. The Northern District Extension Staff is using its share of the grant to fund the Farm Financial Counseling Program. This program is a coordinated effort of Virginia Tech Extension, local Extension staffs, Extension Farm Management personnel, local agricultural lenders and trained Financial Counseling volunteers.
During April, local Extension Agents have been identifying and recruiting volunteers to work with the project. To date over half of the needed 10-12 volunteers have been located. These volunteers, including retired lenders, Extension Agents and farmers, will be provided a training session so that they will be able to more efficiently service farmers who request assistance.
Trained volunteers will be ready to go to work in the Northern Extension District on June 3. Call the Extension office now to get an early appointment. This type of assistance by Extension is not new except that volunteers have never been used to work in farm finance programs.
