Eight boys and seven girls from RCHS competed in the regional track meet at Western Albermarle on May 17. Three of the team members placed high enough to qualify for the state meet held at Spotswood on May 25.
Donna Williams, on her last ati tempt at the regional competition, tossed the shot put 30’H” to place sixth. At state, she was unable to meet that mark and she did not make the finals.
Connie Compton heaved the shot 33’10” for a second place medal. She was beaten by Robinson from Strasburg who threw the shot over 40’ for a regional record. “Connie just missed the finals at state with her throw of 31’3”,” Coach Ann Spieker said.
Katheryn Davis jumped 16’1” in the long jump, which was her season best, to place second in regional competition. At state she leaped 15’10” olacing her ninth and out of the finals.
“In wrapping up the season, I can say that it was successful even though the team did not win a lot of meets,” Spieker said. “We lacked depth, but did well individually with 12 new athletes added to the record board at RCHS.”
Students who have set school records this year are: Ricky Shaw, Jonathan Watson, Ronnie Atkins, James Dennis, David Fischbein (3), Jimmie Freeman, Anita Delgrosso (2), Heather Blevins, Denice Eidson, Karen Ludwick, Kelly Brown and Elizabeth Jenkins.
