Mr. Call said that the “last three dry years have had a drastic effect” on his farm. Of 1,300 blueberry bushes, he lost more than half to last year’s dry summer. From two fields of strawberries planted last year, totalling 8,000 plants, one plot was “totalled” and the other, with about 2,000 plants left, “will probably have to be plowed under and started over again next year.” A raspberry patch with more than 700 plants was “wiped out ... I lost all but five plants.”
Mr. Call’s corn crop, slated for sale at his roadside stand, “looks fairly good. The early planting is up five to six inches, the second planting two weeks later looks good, but the third planting, which has had no rain on the seeds at all, isn’t doing anything.” He added: “There’s no
