“The Federal deficit is the chief remaining obstacle to a sound economy and I pledge to continue to work towards its reduction. Unfortunately, the leadership in the House of Representatives does not seem to have received the message of the 1984 election.”
Slaughter noted that the budget recently reported to the floor by the House leadership would increase taxes and reduce spending on defense in order to cut the deficit — “contrary to the winning message of President Reagan in 1984.”
Slaughter’s name was placed in nomination by Delegate George E. Allen (R-Albemarle), and seconded by Delegate Harry J. Parrish (RManassas) and Mrs. Betty Burkholder of Winchester.
Mrs. Burkholder, Allen and Parrish are three of Slaughter’s cochairmen of his re-election campaign. A fourth co-chairman, Delegate Frank D. Hargrove (RHanover), served as permanent chairman of the convention which was held at Stafford High School.
