Fauquier tax hike likely

Fauquier residents could face a 19 cent real estate tax increase if the Board of Supervisors decides to fully fund School Board and county government budget requests for 1986-87.
But, County Administrator Steve Crosby said any tax rate increase probably won’t exceed five cents. The current rate is 63 cents per $100 of assessed value.
Taxes will increase only to fund School Board needs, according to Mr. Crosby.
Wednesday night the supervisors were to have held a public hearing on spending requests totalling $39.1 million for the coming fiscal year. Mr. Crosby soon will make his final budget cut recommendations to the supervisors, who will adopt the document at their June meeting.
Of the total request, $28.2 million would go to funding education needs The remainder — $9 4 million -- would be spent on general government. Mr. Crosby is recommending a 10 percent salary increase for all county employees, excluding school personnel. The School Board wants a 13 percent salary increase for its employees.
