becoming more involved with the schools and will seek to find $8,000 to match a similar School Board contribution to pay for visits by eight different artists.
“In the long term, the School Board must set a priority on what portion of its budget will go to the arts,” Ms. Marshall said, at the same time acknowledging that the board is “working with limited funds.” And in the longer term, she continued, the board should consider adding a regular art teacher to the'educational staff. “But it’s still good for artists in the community to participate. We want to augment what’s available.”
As the School Board members looked over photos of rapt students watching Dan Lewis work and examples of art created by both students and teachers, Ms. Marshall invited them to visit the Middle Street Gallery to view the exhibit put on by the RCES youngsters. “It’s drawn rave reviews,” she concluded, noting that the display will continue through Labor Day weekend.
