Ms. Shenk stressed that the copies produced by the microfilming project are intended only as a backup to the original documents contained in the county courthouses and are not available to the public in Richmond.
“If nothing ever happens to the original documents on file at the courthouse, the microfilm will probably never be used. The wear and tear on the record books caused by years of use — or an accident —can’t be eliminated, and this is just one way of providing a backup.”
Copies of the records will only be made available for research purposes to properly authorized people with the permission of the clerk of the court.
