Artwork done by students at the Rappahannock County Elementary School is on exhibit at the Middle Street Art Gallery. The show, which opened last weekend, is the product of local artist Dan Lewis’ month-long artist-in-residency at the school last month. The works on display include watercolors, oils, pencil drawings, crayon, pastels, oil paint and multimedia creations.
In addition to the pieces done by the students there are also several works done by teachers at the elementary school. Mr. Lewis conceived the exercise with the teachers to give them a better feel for the process that the students were experiencing as they worked with him.
Mr. Lewis said that the artist-inresidence was a “rewarding experience for me, to interact with the kids. They are so receptive to art— especially drawing. Once I demonstrated how to do it they were eager to try it themselves. Sometimes it was frustrating for them. . .but they kept trying. I also tried to demonstrate the value of art in other subjects—visualizing mental images and communicating them is part of any creative process.”
