The students participated in a guided tour at the airport which lasted over an hour after an extensive lecture on airplanes. They were able to get a close look at several planes and observe landing and departure techniques. Most of the planes were privately owned; however, there were some commercial jets.
“They showed the students how to get through the x-ray machine,” explained Ms. Maeyer. “They explained that if you try to go through three times and it keeps beeping and they can’t figure out what it is then they have the right to hand search you or you don’t get on. You have your choice — to get on the airplane or not.”
At the newspaper office the students observed the printing process of the Daily Progress. The tour guide led them through the plant on an elevated walkway where the students could observe the workings of the paper without disturbing the work in progress.
