A fire which destroyed the Botetourt County Courthouse in December 1970 made state officials aware of the need to create a duplicate set of public records, catalogued and stored in a safe, central location, in case the original documents kept by the local governments were destroyed.
The preservation effort is nearly completed, Ms. Shenk said. She explained that the project has been proceeding, county by county, with priority given to those jurisdictions which had no duplicates of important records and which state officials believed would be in the most danger of losing those documents in case of a catastrophe, such as the one which destroyed the Botetourt courthouse and the county records.
Rappahannock was not a high-priority county, Ms. Shenk explained, because the county had some
