Ms. Shenk said that church records, “especially back in time, provide better records than those found anywhere else — not so much the legal records, but those of children born, marriages, family histories, ministers’ diaries, cemetery plats, bits and pieces not recorded anywhere else. Often people don’t realize how valuable those records are. The clerk’s records only go back to 1833, when the county was established, and we know there were churches here before then.”
“Many of the old church records may be in private hands, stored in attics or in barns. In those conditions it doesn’t take long for them to deteriorate. If the roof leaks mould will rot the paper, or a hot, dry attic will remove the moisture and the paper will just crumble away.”
