Mr. Lewis’ wife, Ann Eagan, said that his experience “was neat for me—to watch him go through the experience of teaching. I’m not an artist and it was fascinating to see the creative process. . . I asked him, ‘How do you teach how to draw a bunny?’ ”
“The artist-in-residence program, which allows the artist to work in the school as if he is in his studio, is particularly valuable to the children,” Mr. Lewis said. The six watercolors of springtime in Rappahannock County which he did during his stay at the school are also a part of the exhibit. He explained that he sketched the works on the weekends and painted the pictures during the week. “Being able to watch me work—to see the paintings in progress—gave the kids a sense of how an artist works, how the piece develops, how the creative process produces images. I imagine it inspired some—I know they got a kick out of seeing it happen.”
