“They were real lucky that a neighbor happened to pass by and noticed smoke seeping out from around the windows,” said Greg Wayland, Chief of Engine Co. 2, Sperryville, the first unit on the scene. Fire had broken out in the bedroom of a home rented by Warren Kampin, on Rt. 707 in Slate Mills, at about 12:40 p.m. Tuesday.
The alarm was turned in by Joan Taylor, who noticed the smoke as she drove past the house. Her quick phone call, plus the fact that Mr. Kampin had left the doors and windows in the bedroom shut, “probably saved the house,” said Chief Way
