Has the curtain fallen for the last time? Will the stage stay dark or will the Rappahannock Players be back for an encore? .
That’s the question that the county’s troupe of theater aficionados will try to answer next week with a telephone survey. Members of Rappahannock’s little theater company will be calling folks to determine if there’s support for amateur theater here. They hope that among the names selected at random from the telephone directory, they’ll find theater fans who will join and inject the Players with fresh energy, enthusiasm and commitment.
The players have lapsed into inactivity since the 1984 production of Wait Until Dark, the last in a series of acclaimed comedies, dramas and musicals.
“Nothing has been happening. That’s the problem,” lamented Sam 0 Connor, one of the company’s leading ladies. “We had hoped to do The Mikado this spring, but we couldn’t find a director. Now we have a director, but we no longer have an active group behind us.”
“We’ve got to have more of an organization,” noted stage veteran Waldron O’Connor. “We don’t need just actors — although we certainly could use more. We need directors, seamstresses to sew costumes, set designers, carpenters, painters, poster artists, technicians, make-up artists — people for just about everything related to a theatrical production.”
