Rappahannock News Special Writer Rappahannock Elementary School’s EMH I and II students participated in a Special Olympics track and field meet held May 3 at Woodberry F orest. Teacher Kim Carroll talked about this special day. “We started practicing two months before the event. We had the kids run every day and practice with the softball throw. We put them into heats and timed them. The last week before the Special Olympics we took the kids to the high school and practiced on the track so they would be familiar with running on a track. We also used the starting gun so they wouldn’t be frightened when they got to the games. That really benefitted them because it also gave them practice staying in' their lanes,” Ms. Carroll commented.
There were other events going on at the Olympics. A ventriloquist entertained and Smokey the Bear was there. Frisbee, soccer and volleyball clinics were set up. When the participants finished a race and had a long time before their next ra.ce they could attend one of these clinics.
The Olympics events were set up according to age groups and sexes.
