Only triploid (sterile fish with 50 percent more chromosomes than normal) grass carp certified as such from an approved supplier are permitted for import. It is illegal to import diploid (fertile fish with the normal number of chromosomes) into Virginia. This restriction is intended to protect our native sport fish from competition with this exotic species.
