James Henry “Goose” Pullen, 63, died Sunday afternoon in an inferno which quickly engulfed and destroyed his Washington home.
The small frame house behind Baldwin’s Grocery Store “was fully involved when we arrived,” said Roger Roach, chief of the Washington Volunteer Fire Department, the first company on the scene.
“The heat was so intense, no one could get near the house,” added Lt. Jeff Brown of the Rappahannock County Sheriffs Department.
“All we could do was lay lines in and control the burning brush (around the yard). The house was too far gone to put out,” Chief Roach said.
The alarm was turned in at 4:09 p.m. by Marie Davis, a neighbor of Mr. Pullen. Firemen arrived several minutes later to find the structure completely engulfed in flames.
