"Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverance her husband." (Ephesians 5:33) From this and other scriptures we can see one outstanding trait of a good Christian marriage, respect for one another.
But what does it mean to respect one another? First, it means to value your mate. A husband that truly loves his wife with the God kind of love will see and appreciate the priceless worth of his mate. Let me ask you husbands. Do you treasure your wife as a gift from God or has she become a second class person to you? How about you wives? It is sad that the one person who should mean the most to us in life often becomes the object of our anger or indifference. But God's love in us can change that.
Second, to respect means to hold in high regard. In fact the scripture tells us that we are to “esteem other better than themselves." (Philippians 2:3) Here is an easy way to check whether you actually esteem you spouse better than yourself. Ask yourself, "Is my mate's welfare more important to me than my own?" The bottom line is this, your partners success should mean more to you than your own.
