As the “enumerators” scoured the hollows for facts about the families living there, they dug up some interesting information that didn’t seem to fit into any category.
But reluctant to leave it out, they recorded even that data unnecessary for their resettlement survey.
They found that pnly farmers in the Rappahannock portion of the mountains grew oats. In fact, people in the other counties before the park hadn’t even heard of oats. But in Rappahannock, any family with any smooth land raised oats.
Names were fascinating, and they varied from county to county.
