Flint Hill responded to the fire.
Quick action by Lt. Brown saved Greg Wayland, captain of the Sperryville Volunteer Fire Department, from serious injury. Mr. Wayland was combing the ashes looking for Mr. Pullen when one of the two fireweakened chimneys began to collapse. Lt. Brown shouted a warning and Mr. Wayland jumped clear as the chimney crashed down into the ashes where he had been searching.
Firemen found Mr. Pullen’s body in the hallway just behind the front door of the house.
An autopsy is being performed by the Fairfax County medical examiner. The results were not available Wednesday morning.
The cause of the fire has not been established. Mr. Pullen was apparently at home alone when the fire started.
