Help dispatchers
Recently, several citizens have made emergency calls to the Rappahannock County Fire and Rescue dispatcher but have been unable to provide the dispatcher with precise directions to the location where assistance was needed.
Precious minutes were lost as the dispatcher attempted to direct responding equipment to the right place. Those minutes could mean the difference between life and death in an emergency situation.
The dispatchers urge all county residents to become familiar with the location of their house, including route numbers and directions to turn from main highways. Landmarks and/or mile measures to the house are also helpful to fire and rescue drivers.
Children who are old enough to use the phone in an emergency also should be familiar with the location of their homes and should be able to give that information to the dispatcher.
Ask yourself if YOU could describe precisely, in the panic of a fire or life-threatening medical emergency, the location of your home to someone who might not be as familiar with the area as you are.
If that situation arrives, it is too late to realize that you can’t.
