Largest Jig-Saw Puzzle reports that, in Rappahannock County, a large hollow settled by seven families had been entirely deserted. This was a prosperous hollow, with good land, houses, barns and outbuildings in reasonably good shape, but there was no one there. One home had many furnishings remaining inside.
A commission called the Division of Subsistence Homesteads studied the situation of the mountain people. The commission became convinced that many of the residents could not relocate themselves but that planned “homesteads” would fill their needs.
Eleanor Roosevelt became involved with the mountain people, pushing for homesteads that would offer more conveniences to their tenants.
