Lowland farmers wondered how those who farmed the mountain slopes could even stay in the fields because they were so steep (bottom right photo). Central to the mountain economy was the chestnut tree, and many cabins such as this (bottom left) one in Nicholson Hollow were constructed of “hand-rived” chestnut shingles. After most of the great chestnuts died, people would still use the wood from the dead trees until they were all gone. In Dark Hollow, the Cave family (top photo) renders lard after butchering hogs. The father, Ralph Cave, is stirring, and the mother, Elsie, holds baby John Cave. Lester Weakley is helping.
