Harold Welch of Flint Hill will be among more than 100 Virginia high school students who will soon get an opportunity to study various art forms with noted professionals during the 1986 Governor’s School for the Arts at Radford University.
Scheduled for June 29-July 26, the juniors and seniors from across the state will work in their area of expertise including music, art, theatre, dance and radip. A staff of 29 faculty members will direct the students.
“What we’ve created is an arts community made up of students, working professionals, college and secondary teachers,” according to Bennett Lentczner, dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts and director of the' Governor’s School.
“Within each discipline it’s our intent to have students develop a better understanding of their own art as it relates to professional training,” he said. In addition to teaching, the professional artists will prepare for their own performances next season. This will provide students with a unique opportunity to observe professionals at work, Lentczner added. Faculty members also will present a public performance July 4 with an American theme.
