With the permit for the present privately owned and operated landfill near Woodville valid only through July 1, 1987, the -county faces a fast approaching deadline for finding a solution to its trash problem. Under new permitting procedures, approval of a landfill site generally takes seven months, according to Robert Forman, area supervisor for the Division of Solid Waste Management.
The state is currently considering an application from Tom, Loretta and James Lee to operate a private landfill on 25 to 30 acres of their farm 1 1/2 miles from Washington’s town limits. Washington’s town council is adamantly opposed to the site as were all the speakers who packed a public hearing held by the Board of Supervisors. However, the supervisors recommended approval of the site to the state by a majority vote of four to one, with Newbill Miller, representing Hampton District the lone dissenter.
