Ihe value of the marine resources of the Chesapeake Bay is second only to its value as a transportation corridor,” Austin says. “The oyster, the blue crab and striped bass or rockfish, along with the sailboat, epitomize our vision of the Bay. Nowhere else do such important renewable natural resources co-exist so close to man’s residential and industrial efforts.”

But it is the latter that is causing the problem. George Helz of the University of Maryland reported that industrial and municipal point sources of contaminants are scattered along the shores of the Bay and its tributaries. The areas of highest density are Norfolk and Baltimore. The contaminants include everything from kepone to reactorgenerated radionuclides. The effect is a decline in the Bay habitat and the reproductive capabilities of its marine life.
