They gave a close-up look at brakes, lights, drivetrains, axles, “things which troopers don’t usually check,” according to Trooper J. R. Huffman, one of the safety team members.
“Usually a checkpoint involves one trooper with portable scales checking for overweight and obvious equipment violations,” commented Trooper H. A. Newlin, who participated in the operation. “We decided to mount a sneak attack and weigh at night . . . We’ve been planning for two weeks to get the safety team up here and check things out.”
A total of 40 trucks were inspected at the roadblock, and eight were found to be in violation of various State Corporation Commission regulations. The infractions ranged from overweight vehicles and registration violations to one truck with a brake adjustment problem so serious his rig was pulled out of service until the defect was repaired.
