The Chesapeake Bay is 200 miles long and from four to 40 miles wide. It is an important fishing ground, famous for its oysters and crabs. Six important rivers run into it. Three states are trying to keep them clean.
The states are Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia. The rivers are the Susquehanna, Patuxent, Potomac, Rappahannock, York and James. Researchers involved in the joint effort are from the University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins, Pennsylvania State University, Old Dominion University, Virginia Tech and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science of the College of William and Mary.
In a recent meeting on the Chesapeake Bay fisheries and contaminant problems, Herbert Austin and John Olney of VIMS explained that approximately 90 species representing 45 families of marine and estuary fishes use the tidal waters of the Chesapeake Bay as a spawning area.
