Forages that are suspected of high nitrate levels can be sent to the Virginia Tech Forage Testing Lab for free analysis. Samples should be dried if possible, but can be sent green.
If plants test high in nitrates, livestock producers can take several steps to cut down risks. For example, the lower stems of plants are usually the highest in nitrates and the leaf blades are the lowest. If harvesting droughtstricken corn high in nitrates, raising the cutting height will often result in silage containing few nitrates.
