intendent continued. He recalled “an awkward situation” two years ago. “I’m not suggesting that the teacher acted incorrectly but. . . it’s a very sensitive issue when we reach into a home and say to a parent, *We think you’re abusing your children’. ”
The three-hour in-service program to be presented on November 17 will instruct teachers on how to . “forcefully and sensitively” handle a situation of suspected child abuse and how to approach reporting suspected abuse, the superintendent said. School Board members were invited to attend.
The program, which will be conducted by an expert on loan from the Falls Church school system, will also focus on how to differentiate between real and imagined child abuse, the administrators assured the School Board. “We’re not trying to say there’s no child abuse and we’re not trying to soft pedal the problem,” Mr. Estabrook emphasised. But after children view a program like Hugs and Kisses, “we could have a little shaver coming in and rej porting that his father had touched his knee the night before,” he acknowledged.
After the in-service for teachers,: “then we’ll be prepared to work to educate youngsters and the comma- • nity,” the superintendent said. “But we must be careful or we’ll have a lot of mighty upset parents. ” *
