Later,, during a press conference at the library and the group’s luncheon at Airlie House near Warrenton, which was attended by more than 125 people, Mrs. Baliles explained her obsession with adult literacy.
“Once a school teacher, always a school teacher,” said Mrs. Baliles, a former instructor of American government and Virginia politics, as she talked about her “tremendous love” of reading and knowledge.
As she campaigned with her husband, Gerald, she realized that many adults have low skills and few retrainable ones that could help when they lost their jobs in Virginia factories or coal mines.
Adult literacy has been a major priority during her nine months as Virginia’s first lady. She’s worked to establish a foundation of public and private groups that sponsor literacy programs. She’s helped establish a toll-free number for tutors or students and she’s worked on public service announcements and videos explaining the cause.
