Acknowledging that they face a “very sensitive issue,” the Rappahannock School Board members approved an in-service session for teachers as a forerunner to educational programs on child abuse aimed at school children.
“We’re seeing more and more comment and concern across the country regarding child abuse,” announced Superintendent Robert Estabrook at last Tuesday’s board meeting. “I can’t say we’ll be saved from those tragedies in Rappahannock County. We haven’t been and we won’t be.”
Mr. Estabrook said he’d been a£ked by the elementary school’s SPTA to work with parents and teachers in setting up a program on child abuse. Currently under consideration is a play entitled Hugs and Kisses, which uses a dramatic form to explain to young audiences just what constitutes sexual abuse. “This approach has been used in many school divisions,” Mr. Estabrook said, adding that a tape of the play is available for teachers and the board members to review.
