The Panther cross-country teams had mixed luck on October 8 in a home meet against George Mason, but the individual performances were all top-notch.
Marley Hay and Bonnie Grimsley both ran new Rappahannock school records on the hilly course on Turkey Mountain outside Sperry ville.
Hay, usually a loner in first place at the finish line, found himself bested by a split-second by Richie Murr of George Mason. Both runners were timed at 17:22, but Murr was awarded first place and Hay had to settle for second, though his time , set a new school record.
They were followed across the line by Jonathan Watson, who took third in 18:03, besting his nearest competition by 18 seconds. Neil Burke finished third for Rappahannock in ninth place overall (20:05), followed by Dan Herman (11th, 20:32), and John Dodson (12th, 20:41) who rounded out the top five for the Panthers. , Coach Ann Spieker said that the Panthers were hurt by, getting separated, while the George Mason harriers stuck together in a pack and benefitted from team unity and support.
